Sitting on the roof of a typical suburban house, Tavi and Stella, best friends, talk about their lives. “Do you think I’ll leave someday?” one asks the other, in what feels like a kind of premonition of Drinking and Driving. And so begins the summer that will change everything for Stella. An early DIY piece that, anticipating both elements of Avalon Fast’s cinema and her regular collaboration with Jillian Frank, portrays complex feelings about returning home, when everything seems the same and yet completely different. Avalon Fast and Jillian Frank are Canadian filmmakers, often working closely on creative projects. Drinking and Driving is their first co-written and directed feature film. Avalon wrote and directed feature films Honeycomb and CAMP, both in which Jillian appears on screen. The two co-wrote and directed the short film Night Trouble in high school and have been continuing to collaborate since.
