FILMADRID. Festival Internacional de Cine,ECAM Forum,The Swiss Embassy in Spain and Andorra, Cineteca Madrid, Atalante, and DAMA are presenting a retrospective dedicated to Milagros Mumenthaler this June in Madrid, accompanied by a masterclass regarding his work.
Few contemporary female filmmakers have given us such a free, intuitive, and powerful relationship with the image as this Argentine director has throughout her career. Her films have left us with some of the most unforgettable images in recent cinema: suspended moments, subtle gestures, bodies, silences, and landscapes that resonate beyond the narrative. La idea de un lago and Abrir puertas y ventanas are now part of the emotional education of much of contemporary cinephilia, having become essential titles in the cinema of recent decades.
Her cinema reveals a unique relationship with the image, freeing it from conventional narrative structures to bring it closer to the sensory, to intuition, and to memory. Fragmentation does not appear here as a form of distance, but as a deeply vivid way of looking at the world and immersing oneself in our most intimate memories. In her films, memories, emotions, and personal experiences always reveal a political and collective dimension. Reviewing the Argentine filmmaker’s work is an invitation to reclaim the gaze as an active exercise, to rediscover in the image not only a medium of representation, but a form of sensory knowledge.
His latest film, Las Corrientes, which opens the 12th edition of FILMADRID, is perhaps one of the most lucid ways cinema has found to reflect the present through dissociation, estrangement, and disconnection from our surroundings. Through this retrospective, which covers her three feature films, we celebrate a filmmaker who is fundamental to the ethics and aesthetics of contemporary cinema, a creator who has expanded the possibilities of the cinematic image and our way of seeing.
A unique opportunity to enjoy Milagros Mumenthaler’s films and celebrate one of the most distinctive contemporary filmmakers on the international scene this June in Madrid.
