La mujer como imagen, el hombre como portador de la mirada

Carlos Velandia | 2022 | 7′

SYNOPSIS

Faces, bodies, and actions are endlessly juxtaposed. Fragmented pieces of a woman come together and form the volume of what has been her image in the history of cinema.

Critical text

This work, created in solitude by Carlos Velandia, is composed of thousands of fragments: from films, but also gazes, bodies, and faces. La mujer como imagen, el hombre como portador de la mirada takes the form of an experimental video essay as a tribute to Laura Mulvey’s contribution to feminist film theory. Images of women across one hundred years of Hollywood history (1910–2010) coexist in every shot, which, through a single gesture, call into question the archetypes of female representation within an industry that is eminently Western and heteropatriarchal.  DANIELA URZOLA
