Espeletia grandiflora, Quercus humboldtii, Hypotrachyna laevigata, Usnea Sp., Eucalyptus globulus and Taraxacum officinale. These endangered plant species, native to Colombia, are the protagonists of Este no es tu jardín, a short film in which Carlos Velandia and Angélica Restrepo approach the idea of the garden as a political construct, aware of the historical, social and political dynamics embedded in it from its origins to the present day. Colonialism, land privatization and exploitation, deforestation and climate change… Five hundred years of history are inscribed in the particles of these species, which appear to float in the air thanks to the 3D scanning technique used in this “kino-botanical report” —as they call it, marking an intention that is both artistic and research-based— which proposes an immersive and phantasmagoric journey. An immersion that is not only valuable but also absolutely necessary in the times we are living through. Because, in the face of the collapse of humanity, all we can do is look at other species, name them, portray them, and recover the possibility of other forms of existence and coexistence beyond the human. Velandia and Restrepo remind us of the role of cinema in preserving and reimagining a world that humanity is driving towards extinction, reaffirming the need to move beyond anthropocentrism in order to recover lost futures. The world does not belong to us; we are nothing in the face of nature. This is not our garden. DANIELA URZOLA
