Critical text
In her first feature film, Chantal Akerman plays Julie, a silent and lonely woman, who writes letters she doesn't send and eats sugar straight out of a bag. Locked in a room where she does not find her place, Julie ends up finding herself becoming aware of her own body and it is then that she decides to leave the space in which she has been confined to embark on a journey towards the person who, we can sense, must have been the recipient of the letters she did not send.
She makes the journey thanks to a truck driver who picks her up on the road and to whom she feels slightly sexually attracted. However, this man is clearly an otherness, someone who is very alien to her, a man who thinks only of himself and talks only about himself while Julie, silent, watches and listens.
Only when she arrives at her destination, the house of the woman she loves, Julie is able to express what she wants and finds the answer to her desire. Only with this woman can Julie be more exactly herself. Je, tu, il, elle was a provocative film at the time of its release and has become an important reference for contemporary cinema for its sincerity and lucidity, confirming Chantal Akerman as one of the most influential auteurs for new generations of filmmakers.
