Abrir Puertas y Ventanas

Milagros Mumenthaler | 2011 | 99′

SYNOPSIS

Buenos Aires, late summer. Following the death of their grandmother Alicia, with whom they grew up, the three sisters—Marina, Sofia and Violeta—live together in the family home, each learning to cope with her loss. Marina throws herself into her studies and looking after the house; Sofia focuses on her appearance and the latest gossip; and Violeta wanders from her bedroom to the living room, receiving occasional visits from a man older than herself. This uncertain interlude is filled with laughter, arguments, wicked remarks and affection, until one autumn day Violeta suddenly disappears.

Critical text

The year 2011 seems now too far, when an almost unknown Milagros Mumenthaler begun catching the attention at the festival circuit with her opera prima, Abrir puertas y ventanas. The story of three sisters and a family large house haunted the audience at awards like Locarno, San Sebastián or Guadalajara. From a minimum premise and an attractive unique scene, the filmmaker built with an unprecedented strength a whole creative universe for her first feature film, which she’s being polishing at her spaced and well meditated screenings. Exploring the (family) sentimental bonds, the entry to adulthood and the immersion to the hidden memory of places loaded with a singular affective weight found comfort in a poetry moved within a fertile field, between sensoriality and the mystery of Lucrecia Martel and the emotional acumen of Mia Hansen-Løve. The lives of the youngsters Marina, Sofía and Violeta, who must learn to grow up and live with each other at their newly passed grandmother’s old house -who raised them- experienced a very meticulous aesthetic approach although at the surface the twists and turns were reduced to the minimal expression. Mumenthaler suggested fifteen years ago a cinema of silence, ellipsis and spaces densely braided by memory, give-ups and attachments, a cinema based of the narrative troop of absence and of the stories related in a whisper. A cinema that parents observation and poetical suggestion with whom diving the complexities that put in our daily lives. GABRIEL DOMÉNECH GONZÁLEZ

BIOGRAPHY

MILAGROS MUMENTHALER
Milagros Mumenthaler

Milagros Mumenthaler was born in Córdoba, Argentina, in 1977, but spent her childhood and youth in Switzerland, where her family was forced into exile. In the 1990s, she decided to return to her home country to enroll at the University of Cinema in Buenos Aires, where she graduated in 2000. She then launched her career as a filmmaker with a series of talented short films in which she began to develop her unique vision. Her debut with ¿Cuándo llega papá? (2000) and Cape Cod (2003) was followed by El patio (2004), a beautiful chamber piece that won an award at BAFICI, in which Mumenthaler’s unique creative universe emerges, defined by a decidedly feminine narrative voice. In 2007, she was selected by a jury headed by Laurent Cantet to join Cinéfondation, the Cannes Film Festival’s artist residency program where Lucrecia Martel, Jaime Rosales or László Nemes took their first steps. That same year, her short film Amancay (2007) was selected for the Locarno Film Festival, a competition that established her international reputation with her first feature film, Abrir puertas y ventanas (2011), which won five awards, including Best Film. In 2017, under the distribution of NUMAX Distribución, Milagros Mumenthaler made her Spanish film debut with La idea de un lago, a moving portrait of loss and memory that was selected for major festivals such as Locarno and San Sebastián. A miraculous and beautiful film that is sure to delight Spanish audiences. Las corrientes is her third film.
