Critical text
A secondary school in a peripheral neighbourhood in the city of Contagem—though it could be that of many other cities in Brazil. In the playground, students challenge each other to a game of "truths", through which they end up narrating their daily struggles and the harshness of their environment. Shortly after, a confrontation in the middle of a lesson between a teacher and a wayward student propels the film towards new horizons of complexity. By transforming the school space into a stage—in the most literal and theatrical sense of the word—for confrontation, encounters, and disagreements, Disciplina creates a metonymy of contemporary Brazilian society, taking a public educational institution as its microcosm. As in his previous works, including Seven Years in May (2019)—winner of the Best Film Award at FILMADRID 2019—Affonso Uchoa once again portrays the reality of his country's most disadvantaged classes, yet he goes far beyond the conventions of documentary or the "cinema of social protest". Through devices where the oral discourse of the protagonists occupies the heart of the narrative, and by means of a poetic approach that allows for a departure from easy descriptive or observational solutions, Uchoa restores a political cinema capable of questioning our ways of looking at and representing uncomfortable realities, as well as giving new form to universal questions. Here, we find the role of education in a broken society, and the hope for a dignified future. GABRIEL DOMÉNECH GONZÁLEZ
