SYNOPSIS

Los Angeles on the cusp of the 2028 Summer Olympics: a series of devastating livestock viruses have wiped out meat and poultry production across the nation, leaving genetically-modified cockroaches the most viable alternative. Meanwhile, a cockroach infestation of biblical proportions overwhelms the city, triggering a rash of eminent domain abuses. Two young grifters dream up their next big score in a paranoid landscape perpetually reshaped by the collapse between legitimized and illegitimate forms of celebration and theft.

Critical text

Recent sociological theories speak of collapse not as an absolute and sudden apocalypse, but as the slow and inexorable decline of this increasingly entropic world of ours. Unlike many dystopias where the twilight of civilization yields to (Hollywood-style) spectacle, Tycoon prefers to ground our failure as a society in the most prosaic everyday life, and therefore in more realistic settings. The debut feature from the young multidisciplinary artist Charlotte Zhang, a rising star of a new "indie" scene that includes luminaries such as Isiah Medina, places us in a not-so-distant future. 2028, following the Los Angeles Olympics: an epidemic affecting livestock is decimating meat supply chains, while a plague of cockroaches ravages the area. In this context, two rogues, desperate to make money at any cost, navigate an urban landscape riddled with precariousness, racism, class difference (and conflict), violence, and technological gridlock. Making a disruptive yet profoundly playful use of various formats and cultural touchstones, and demonstrating a remarkable command of improvisation and DIY aesthetics, Zhang asserts herself with a dystopia that is more unsettling than others of its genre precisely because of the proximity of what she portrays. Collapse is not a reality yet to come; we are already immersed in it, which is not to say that, from time to time, we cannot share a laugh. GABRIEL DOMÉNECH GONZÁLEZ
