Critical text
In Greek mythology, Orpheus is a character who possesses the ability to attract and soothe the beings of the Earth through the music he creates with his lyre. This very gift accompanies him when he descends into the underworld in a failed attempt to reunite with his beloved, Eurydice. The odyssey that Orpheus undergoes is reinterpreted in contemporary terms by Belarusian filmmaker Yuri Semashko in his debut feature, The Swan Song of Fedor Ozerov. In it, a withdrawn young musician embarks on a journey with a single goal in mind: to retrieve his lost lucky sweater. This quest leads him through a series of encounters and missed connections with various characters, all set against a world bracing for the impending arrival of a third world war. The search for meaning and intimacy transforms here into a kind of tragicomedy that evokes a classical literary style while offering a thoroughly contemporary and fresh form of storytelling. In The Swan Song of Fedor Ozerov, the humor of the premise blends with a political perspective on youth that never strays from emotion and focuses on collectivity: on love, solidarity, and artistic creation. On everything that drives us beyond ourselves, to forge together a path toward the sun of tomorrow and, like Orpheus, never look back. Daniela Urzola
