Skill Issue

Willy Hans | 2024 | 94′

SYNOPSIS

After escaping from gym class, SIMON (17) finds himself on the banks of a river with a group of teenagers. In the heat of the summer day and amidst all the pointless chatter, time passes as sluggishly as the river water. Only when MARIE appears and both are catapulted into the nearby riverside forest by an unexpected incident do they escape the lethargic group and enter the timeless intermediate realm of the enchanted river landscape.

Critical text

Cinema is well acquainted with the creative potential of adolescence, and there is no shortage of films that take place during this transitional stage into adulthood, a period where fascination, inexperience, and freedom of movement converge. This is precisely the moment in which the characters of Skill Issue, the debut feature film by Willy Hans, find themselves. Hans is already familiar to the Filmadrid audience. When Simon decides to skip his gym class, he embarks on a wandering journey that leads him and other young people to spend the day by the river. The heat and leisure of the afternoon translate into mysterious murmurs exchanged between them, lazy games, and poetic images of nature. The only thing that passes through this secluded space is the river water. Only when María, another young wanderer, arrives does Simon seem to emerge from his inertia, and together they decide to explore the area. In their social awkwardness, a fascination with one another begins to emerge—an intensity, a sense of enjoyment. With an utterly immersive atmosphere, Skill Issue is a film that submits to nothing: not to narrative, not to space, not to reality, not to fiction. Willy Hans constructs each image like a summer dream and, like his characters, allows the film to move through its surroundings, shifting perspectives and revealing a latent curiosity that surprises with its boldness.
