Love Intervention (3’ 15’’)
València en flames (6’ 20’’)
ON THE LOOKOUT FOR A FALLERO FIRE
When diving into an unknown medium we are always faced with success and failures as part of the creative process. These two pieces show personal growth within 16mm cinema, through the construction and, above all, the destruction of the medium. Love intervention seeks a narrative constructed from the remake of another film. A manipulation of stock footage that aims to arouse a longing for a forgotten past in which memory has taken its toll, physically erasing images from the past. Using found footage from an animated film (Hansel and Gretel: An Opera Fantasy, 1954) as a source, and through chemical intervention and scratches on the film emulsion itself, the film medium evokes the emotions tied to the memories of the break-up of a romantic relationship. On the other hand, with the idea of reproducing the camera exercises proposed in works such as Voiliers et Coquelicots by Rose Lowder and A and B in Ontario by Hollis Frampton and Joyce Wieland, València en flames presents itself as a didactic piece about the filming tools that the Bolex camera allows for. The frame-by-frame construction of the movie, along with flashes of moments around Valencia, create the impression of fire taking over the city’s buildings while portraying the city geographically at the same time. In both pieces, fire takes the lead role on the lookout for a fallera soul within cinema.
