Critical text
The cinema of the creative tandem formed by Felice D’Agostino and Arturo Lavorato has explored, from the beginning of the millennium, the best tradition of the militant art made in Italy. It also picks up on one of its favourite topics: the Meridione, an everlasting space for struggle and claim of a people that has first been subdued by the designs of the Risorgimento and after that by the capitalist miracolo. What if that known today as Italy was the product of the Southern regions colonisation by an expansionist North? From this premise, the filmmakers articulate a revulsive political manifesto, clung to the landscapes of the humblest Calabria, to its archive footage, to its inhabitants, a community that does not see itself in the historical narratives of national unity, industrialization and progress. A community proud of its origins, ready to link its lament and its anger to those of other nations, other Souths. GABRIEL DOMÉNECH
