Critical text
The possibility of reflection on the class struggle in today's Europe by renewing traditional genres is sublimely materialized in Rabah Ameur-Zaïmeche's new feature film. An enlightening, razor-sharp political thriller that marks another peak in the career of one of the most fascinating (and underrated) directors of our time. We meet a group of men living in the Parisian banlieue, survivors surrounded by a hostile reality who come together to commit robberies. A small criminal organisation that finds its most ambitious goal in a hit on an Arab prince, a symbol of the oligarchies that rule the Middle East (and beyond). The action goes according to plan, but of course reprisals will follow. The Temple Woods Gang starkly shows how the system continues to retreat, how the hegemony of the powerful remains immovable, and how the enforcement of the upper class is executed, as always, through the use of violence. The film traces this inexorable fate, but above all it composes a unique portrait of comradeship and solidarity. To this end, Rabah Ameur-Zaïmeche deploys a powerful and direct mise-en- scène, free of arabesques, in which an extraordinary cast shines, led by Régis Laroche and Philippe Petit, with the appearance of the brilliant Algerian musician Sofiane Saidi. A cinema of the collective that sustains and reinforces the need for eternal struggles. JAVIER H. ESTRADA
