Critical text
In this evocative film title that arrives from Finland like a breath of fresh air, Jesse Jalonen presents a docufiction about the meaning of existence and loneliness. Curiously, filmed (for the most part) with a phone whose brand slogan says that it “connects people”.
In a little more than an hour of footage, we enter a universe close to us, but with science fiction overtones. Some of its characters suffer from a disease called LLPS (Louis Le Prince Syndrome), which means that people who suffer from it cannot be seen or heard, unless they are recorded with an audiovisual device such as a camera or a microphone.
Because of the particular approach and the importance of video images, it may seem that we are going to desecrate the lands of the Canadians David Cronenberg or Atom Egoyan. But Jalonen deviates from them to venture into other terrain at his own risk. The Finn reflects on the concept of life through the image, in today's society where photos and videos that populate social networks prevail. It seems that if we do not see something or someone on a screen, it does not exist, while imaginary creatures like Pokemon seem real when people chase them in the street with their phones.
This is a down-to-earth fantasy about people who want to be seen, about the loneliness that unites us and about the perception we have of others. To paraphrase the band Golpes bajos: “don't look into people's eyes, they scare me, they always lie”. MARCOS CASADO
