Critical text
The third feature by Canadian director Sofia Bohdanowicz is an elegant and powerful autobiographical fiction, played by the film’s co-director, Deragh Campbell. This interesting game of personalities allows both directors to represent the same figure: the great-granddaughter of poet Zofia Bohdanoviczowa. The protagonist’s research into the letters that the great-grandmother wrote to her colleague Jozef Wittlin, a renowned Polish poet also in exile, reveals the relationship between two women from the same family who never converged in space and time, but who share intimate ties of complicity. The letters also function as material objects linking the past and the present, while at the same time highlighting their most essential part, the substance from which the word is made. MS Slavic 7 is an emotionally mature and serene film, away from sentimental fuss but containing powerful potential passions. NURIA CUBAS
