SYNOPSIS

Alaina is tired of being a police officer in the Pine Ridge Reservation, and decides to stop answering her radio. Her niece Sadie spends a long night waiting for her, to no avail. Hurt, she decides to begin her journey with the help of her grandfather: she will fly through time and space to South America, finally she will stop watching old black and white westerns that do not represent her in any way, and everything will feel different when she hears the dreams of other people, those who live in the forest. But there will be no definitive conclusions… Birds don’t talk to humans, yet if only we could understand them, they would surely have a few truths to tell us.

Critical text

Dynamiting conventions of time and space, Eureka flows as a creative compendium of Lisandro Alonso's concerns and, at a time, as an overwhelming extension of his universe. Sublimely framed in black and white, set in the Old West in the frontier of the town, a man seeks for revenge... All of a sudden the film turns into colour and brings us to the nowadays Dakota, where a police officer and member of a native American community, sees his vulnerability in relation to the American establishment, still trapped in his own cruel capitalist ambition... Next minute we find ourselves in the '70s, in the Amazonia. In a new tempo, Eureka flows and astonishes with this unique experience combining hypnotic sensory introspection on human kind signed by colonialism, and the loss of identity. And yet, evoking the chance of its recovery through the traces that remain in the art of storytelling

Against the imposed codes of a reductionist logic, appealing to our muting abilities and to our idealistic essence... Almost a decade now since Alonso's last film: Jauja, and almost 25 years since his debut with Freedom. With Eureka he fascinates once again and takes the stand as one of the few contemporary creators capable of trascending the limits of cinema and, therefore, of the respresentation of existence in images and sounds, walikng us through trails we could have never imagined.
