Critical text
The transmission, as a fundamental act of keeping alive the legacy that shapes us, supports the work of Eugène Green since his debut with Toutes les nuits (2001). On that path to the light of knowledge through language, the approach of En attendant les barbares reveals its deep congruence. Working hand by hand with the interpreters of the Chantiers Nomades workshop, located in Toulouse, the author not only makes them models of his refined style book, but also imbues them with Occitan’s rich cultural tradition, demonstrating that he thinks and represents the heritage of the past like few current filmmakers. The result of the process is a playful fiction where six characters have to renounce to technology to protect themselves in an anachronistic castle from the attack of “the barbarians”. Thus, with his usual, hopeful and ironic look, Green reminds us that, as long as we make knowledge survive as a refuge from the hegemonic monsters of ignorance and barbarism, not all will be lost to humanity.
