Critical text
What would happen if one day you wake up and your face has been completely transformed: are you still the person you see in the mirror or have you become someone else? Has only your face changed or, with it, your identity? Is it possible to separate one from the other? In El rostro de la medusa, the Argentinean filmmaker Melisa Liebenthal starts from the relationship of observation between humans and animals to propose a reflection on identity that challenges anthropocentrism. By analysing the gaze established between human and animal, Liebenthal traces the face and reduces it to a minimal expression, thus exploring the different configurations and reconfigurations that can arise between two or more faces, whether they belong to the same species or to different species. The face of the jellyfish takes shape in a kind of exquisite cinematographic corpse in which different languages converge: from drawing and digital interventions to the montage sequences that the director constructs with photographs (from her past or taken by herself) and in which she plays with the possible combinations of faces to question where we come from and why we are the way we are. In this way, in the absurdity and eccentricity of the initial premise, the film, halfway between the dramatic and the comic (at times playing with the codes of the comedy of entanglement), finds its deepest reflection. One that starts from the outside to wonder about what is inside; from the gaze to reveal what is behind the eye that observes. DANIELA URZOLA
