Demonic

There is a certain parallel between the society described by Demonic, where the mass media and public opinion dictate the code of moral conduct, and the current climate of social tension caused by fake news and the immediacy of information.
Pia Borg composes a multifaceted portrait of the power of suggestion and collective manipulation through the reconstruction of several events linked to satanic practices, or rather the media repercussions they had: in the eighties, these cases were key in the establishment of a collective hysteria that spread through North American society. From the very first moments, the narrative takes on the appearance of a horror film, with the incursion of elements typical of the genre both visually (disturbing cross-cuts through the empty digitised rooms) and sonically (voice-overs narrating or reconstructing the horrifying testimonies of satanic rituals). Combining different types of images (the digital reproduction of spaces or the recreation of certain events by actors), the director constructs a play of perspectives and associations where suggestion is at the epicentre of the story. The result is a visual collage that encourages us to question the nature of images and the veracity of everything that is subject to cognitive processes such as perception or memory. A questioning that even reaches the cinematographic essence: while the limits between documentary and fiction are blurred, the filmic image confronts the neutrality of all representation.
