Critical text
Nothing is what it seems behind the quite appearances of idyllic rural Germany. This trilogy is neither the usual Germanic film about the dark side of the European bourgeoisie. Defying all kinds of expectations, using up a sly, surly humour and leaving behind a torrent of tension and unease, The Satanic Thicket - whose three instalments aroused admiration and applause at the Oberhausen, Locarno and Rotterdam festivals - reveals an outstanding filmmaker, a conspicuous creator of atmospheres and a boisterous narrator. With his triptych, Willy Hans achieves one of the finest achievements of young German and, by extension, European cinema. Film(s) worth getting into and getting lost in.
