Critical text
Beatrix is the first film by Milena Czernovsky and Lilith Kraxner and it is overwhelmingly honest. With hardly any words and with enormous simplicity it opens up to the inner universe of a woman, Beatrix, with her philias and her phobias, her strengths and her weaknesses. Beatrix is in her thirties and has just arrived in a house where everything is new to her, yet it seems that Beatrix could be anywhere because life is somewhere else, probably within herself, as evidenced by the long moments of idleness when she rests on a large rubber ball in the garden.
Beatrix arranges the house to her liking and thinks a lot and despite what it might seem, she is not alone, nor is the house as isolated as it seems. Occasionally she receives visits from her friends where her special rapport with women is evident. Together with her friends, Beatrix is most clearly herself. Also noticeable is the presence of an older woman who previously lived in the house and whose clothes and objects Beatrix gradually makes her own.
With a naturalistic 16mm cinematography by Antonia de la Luz Kašik, Beatrix enters fully into the most important contemporary conflicts, finding oneself in an ever-changing space and assuming transformation and conflict as an everyday occurrence. NURIA CUBAS
