SYNOPSIS
BIOGRAPHY
In 1981, Tom Joslin and Mark Massi moved to Los Angeles. When both were diagnosed with HIV, Tom decided to film their experiences and include them in a new film. Initially conceived as a broad reflection on the historical and cultural factors of the pandemic, on the shadows of Hollywood cast in the Silver Lake neighbourhood, the film was completed by his entourage posthumously. This first retrospective of Tom Joslin in our country seeks to vindicate the work of a pioneering filmmaker, whose filmography raises questions about the past of LGTBIQ+ representation, shared authorship in autobiographical cinema or the historical immediacy of the video diary in times of pandemic. At the same time, this film series is part of a broader work of archive recovery and preservation of his work, an ongoing project initiated by the filmmaker Miguel Rodríguez and which has involved the collaboration of artists such as Gus Van Sant, Peter Friedman, Elaine Mayes and David Macaulay, who knew the filmmaker first-hand.

Critical text
Inspired by the writings of José Argüelles, Architecture of Mountains is composed of a complex mosaic of relationships: the differences between representation and presentation, the interaction between the viewer and the screen, or waking and dreaming during the filming process itself. To this end, Joslin decides to create a mechanism that wakes him up in the wee hours of the morning and allows him to narrate his dreams to the camera.
The project was shot in the vicinity of Florence, Massachusetts, during the director's brief stay at Hampshire College, and includes dreamlike recreations, a lengthy interview with Argüelles and diaries shot on 16mm film. Hidden in a garage for decades, the film was reconstructed by filmmaker Abraham Ravett and his students, Ben Balcom and Sam Shapiro. MIGUEL RODRÍGUEZ
