FILMADRID International Film Festival celebrates its 10th edition and once again it will collaborate with MUBI, the global film distributor, streaming service, and production company, on what’s now a long-running tradition: a unique online section dedicated to the art of the video essay.
This virtual space will be one of the pillars of the festival. A non-competitive section, The Video Essay’s selection includes some of the most innovative works in the field, which contemplate the evolution of this format and explore its different trends.
Beginning in the first week of June, one video essay from the selection will premiere online each week—giving each piece its own breathing room and emphasis—on MUBI’s film publication, Notebook.
The selection will be made by the FILMADRID programmers and Notebook editors. The registration period will remain open until April 24, 2024. Video essays must meet the requirement of never having been exhibited before, neither online nor in movie theaters. There is no duration limit per work and artists can provide a text to accompany their video essay. The complete rules can be consulted here. All works must be registered through the form that can be found on the festival’s website.
In the last seven editions, The Video Essay received submissions from more than 30 countries. Participants have included artists such as Mark Rappaport, Catherine Norton, Philip Brubaker, Adrian Martin, Mayra Morán, Eva Elcano, and Jorge Negrete, among many others.
