Two years ago MUBI and FILMADRID launched this section which great success. For the first call for entries we received very interesting works reflecting on filmmakers such as Yasujiro Ozu, Chantal Akerma, and Edward Yang, among others. In the second year, video essays such as Hollis (Miguel Rodríguez), Strange, What Love Does (Diego Cepeda, Luis Franze and Claudia Munuera), and Cuadrante Solar (Luis Lechosa) have appeared on the prestigious list of “Best Video Essays Of The Year” in the annual survey from Sight & Soundmagazine. Also, Cuadrante Solarwas later exhibited at art centers such as Tabakalera in San Sebastián.
“Our collaboration with FILMADRID results in presenting some of the most interesting and exciting video essays produced each year,” says Daniel Kasman, Director of Content at MUBI. “That the videos reach an audience both in cinemas in Madrid and online through MUBI achieves an ideal of accessibility we are very proud of.”
Nuria Cubas and Fernando Vílchez, directors of FILMADRID, are excited about the third edition of this special section of the festival: “These two years we have received video essays of unique beauty, where reflection on the audiovisual has been linked to a formal rigor, we are proud to receive such amazing proposals once again.”
